Ready to step into a real-life snowglobe? As a proud local in one of America’s “Prettiest Small Towns,” I’m happy to share that Black Mountain lives up to the holiday hype— delivering its fair share of small-town charm and Hallmark-movie-level cheer. The most wonderful time of the year kicks off in this corner of Western NC on the first Friday in December, with the time-honored Holly Jolly event.
Bedecked in twinkling lights and the cutest window displays, shops stay open late, offering specials and sweets, so you can check off your holiday gift list and treat yourself. We always stop by Europa for Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Glühwein (German hot mulled wine), and a Christmas ornament for our growing collection. Festivities continue the next day with the annual Christmas Parade featuring whimsical floats, classic cars, dance and band performances, and a show-stopping conclusion from the Jolliest fellow of all, Santa Claus.
Saturday evening, Lake Tomahawk Park hosts the annual Circle of Lights—a luminary walk around the lake complete with complimentary hot cider and hot chocolate from local favorite, Four Sisters Bakery. Holly Jolly weekend also ushers in the annual Deck the Trees event, a Christmas fundraiser for the Swannanoa Valley Christian Ministry (SVCM). This heartwarming tradition supports the meaningful cause of keeping local residents warm throughout winter, with participating locations around town showcasing dozens of beautifully decorated Christmas trees for visitors to admire during business hours.
Black Mountain’s Holly Jolly event is the perfect opportunity to don your ugliest Christmas sweater, cocoa in hand, while browsing handcrafted goods, listening to live music and performances, and basking in the warm glow of the coziest season. The best part? Greybeard offers several walkable retreats in downtown Black Mountain and Lake Tomahawk, so you can skip the parking hassle and enjoy a winter stroll to all the merriment at your leisure!
