Serena Williams will play Asheville Fed Cup

Serena and Venus Williams will be coming to Asheville next month to take part in the first round of Fed Cup competition. From Feb 10-11, the United States team which includes the Williams sisters and CoCo Vandeweghe, along with a fourth player who will be announced later this week, will take on the Netherlands. The US is looking to defend its crown.

For Serena, this marks her return to competitive tennis for the first time since this time last year, and it’s happening right here in Asheville. Serena has not played a competitive match since giving birth last September to her first child, a little girl. Serena did play in an exhibition last month in Abu Dhabi, losing a close match to French Open Champion Jelena Ostapenko.

Fed Cup competition is required for two of the years leading up to an Olympic year if a player wants to qualify for the Olympic Games. Serena has played in four of the last five Olympic games, going back to 2000. Serena may also see the Fed Cup as a way to continue getting herself match ready as the Grand Slam season approaches. Right now, Serena has won 23 Grand Slam Titles, just one away from Margaret Court’s record.

For more information, including ticket info, please look at the USTA Fed Cup webpage. And act quickly….since the announcement that the Williams sisters would be playing, ticket sales have increased dramatically and a sellout is anticipated.
