If you’re on a time crunch but want to squeeze in a Blue Ridge Parkway sunset, Haw Creek Valley Overlook is a short 15-minute drive from our Asheville vacation rentals. The spot overlooks the Haw Creek Valley community, nearby farms, and parts of the Asheville skyline. In the distance, you can spot the peaks of Mount Pisgah, Piney Mountain, Chestnut Top, Little Bald Mountain, and a few others. There are roughly 6-7 parking spots, so the overlook can be a little busy at peak times, including sunset.
Tanbark Ridge Overlook - Milepost 376.7
Named after a nearby leather tannery, Tanbark Ridge Overlook is also a 15-minute drive from downtown Asheville. Here, you'll get 180-degree views of High Swan, High Knob, and Lane Pinnacle. The overlook is a popular spot for stargazers, so stay awhile and enjoy a clear night sky on the Blue Ridge.
Craggy Dome Overlook - Milepost 364.1
While you can get great views from the Craggy Dome Overlook parking lot, we highly recommend hopping on the Craggy Pinnacle Trail (connected to the parking lot) for some of the best views you’ll find on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The trail is a 20-minute walk with a small elevation gain of 212 feet. At the summit, you’re rewarded with stunning 360-degree views. The trail itself isn’t too difficult, but we do recommend bringing a flashlight if you plan to hike the trail for sunset.
Bull Creek Valley Overlook - Milepost 373.8
This overlook is a perfect stop if you’re coming or leaving a hike at Craggy Gardens. Time it just right, and you’ll get one of the best sunset views on the Blue Ridge Parkway. The overlook sits at 3,483 feet and overlooks Bull Creek Valley. The valley itself has quite a bit of history. In 1799, an early settler of the region, Joseph Rice, hunted the last remaining bison in the area.
Mills Valley Overlook - Milepost 404.5
About 30 to 45 minutes from Asheville, Mills Valley Overlook boasts incredible views on both sides of the Parkway, making it a popular spot for both sunrise and sunset. Seeking more of an adventure? The Mountains-to-Sea Trail is accessible from either end of the parking lot, but make sure you have the proper hiking gear needed for the trail!
