Nestled in Black Mountain in the Swannanoa Valley on the beautiful campus of Camp Rockmont for Boys, Lighter Mount Horsemanship offers many equine activities. LMH offers horsemanship/riding lessons, guided trail rides, Saturday day camps, and equine transport.

Come enjoy the mountain trails of Camp Rockmont. Each ride begins with a short lesson to ensure an understanding of riding. We offer one to three hour trail rides with prices dependent on the length of the ride. Rides are available September through early May as camp starts in June.

You can contact Lighter Mount Horsemanship Instructor, Sara Boelt, directly to schedule your trail riding lesson:

In addition to Lighter Mount Horsemanship at Camp Rockmont, we recommend Sandy Bottom Trail Rides. Located on a secluded ranch minutes north of Asheville, this family-run business has been around for four generations. Crossing picturesque trails that pass through the high country, scenic mountain meadows, and wooded areas of Madison County, you can choose from 1-4 hour rides as well as private lessons.

If you opt for a two, three, or four hour ride, you get the chance to visit their two hundred year old Little Pine Gem mine. For those that opt for the three or four hour tours, you will have a chance to explore the mine, dig for gem-quality garnets you're welcome to keep, and enjoy a picnic lunch if you decide to bring one.

Contact our Guest Services team to request a scheduled trail ride at Sandy Bottoms Trail Rides during your stay.

Safety note: Horseback riding is a sport with risk; therefore, safety is most important for both horse and rider. All riders must read and sign a waiver. Participants under 18 must have the signature of a parent or guardian. Riding helmets, a safety requirement, are provided or you may bring your own. Some restrictions apply so please contact us for more information about this activity.
