Designed by architect Thomas Lawton and once named Home of the Month by the Raleigh News & Observer in collaboration with NC State's School of Design, Serendipity Treehaus is not your typical mountain rental. Nestled among the trees in the charming Village of Cheshire—just a mile from downtown Black Mountain—it earns its name: native stone, cedar shingles, floor-to-ceiling windows, and a loft-like interior that feels like the mountains and forests grew the house themselves. It's ideal for couples or two pairs looking for something with a little more personality than the average cabin.

The Space

The main level is open concept, with a Viking appliance kitchen, a dining table for four, a half bath, a gas log fireplace, and a Smart TV with cable and streaming. French doors open to an upper deck with al fresco dining, perfect for meals with a front row seat to brilliant fall color, frost-kissed branches shimmering in the sun, verdant summer greenery, and delicate spring blossoms.
Upstairs, the king loft bedroom feels true to the treehaus spirit: surrounded by windows (with newly installed blinds for privacy, a romantic balcony for two, a Smart TV, and a luxurious en-suite with a soaking tub and walk-in shower. Downstairs, the lower-level king bedroom has its own Smart TV, a full en-suite with a walk-in shower, and a separate entrance—giving two couples genuine privacy despite the open layout.
Outside, a beautifully crafted stone patio with a wood-burning outdoor fireplace anchors the back of the home, with seating on all three levels to take in the wooded surroundings and cozy neighborhood feel.

A note on the layout: The home's open, loft-style design means there are no interior doors between floors, allowing sound to travel. It's part of what makes the space feel so airy and special, but worth knowing if your group includes early risers or late-night owls.

The Location
Cheshire Village puts walkable dining right outside your door—The Cheshire Arms, Sake Sushi, and Beradu (with a full kitchen and market) are steps away. The community itself also has walking trails, green spaces, and a playground. You'll also find a YMCA gym and pickleball courts across the street. Less than a mile away, you'll find gas stations, a full grocery store, and the "Prettiest Small Town in America," Downtown Black Mountain. This treasured small town has its fair share of shops, restaurants, and breweries, but a quick 20-minute drive lands you in Asheville for even more options.

We immensely enjoyed our stay! The location was so convenient with easy access to charming downtown Black Mountain and also easy access to Ashville. We intended to come to see the Biltmore and found ourselves wanting to stay at our cabin! The rooms were very comfortable and we enjoyed both the indoor fireplace and the outdoor fireplace! Such a lovely community that had everything we needed within walking distance! We hope to come back soon.

This house was simply amazing! The moment my daughters and I pulled up in front of this home we were in awe. My daughters said it best "It's like we are in a fairytale, this can't be real". The home was beautifully decorated and well equipped. I would highly recommend using the soaking tub in the upper bathroom as it was so incredibly relaxing as were the beds. This home is just what my daughters and I needed for a well relaxed vacation. This was my first time to Black Mountain and we will definitely be returning to this quaint town.

We enjoyed our stay at Serendipity Treehouse. We had one small issue with the temperature in the house but someone came to the house to fix it very quickly. It’s a beautiful property. We love the Cheshire neighborhood. I do have one suggestion. I think the stones leading up to the house could use a railing. We had relatives over and it was difficult for them to climb up to the door. I noticed some really pretty ones in the neighborhood that would keep with the beautiful design of the home.

Whimsical, upscale fun "treehaus" in the woods

Cheshire is a unique, quiet, upscale, lushly forested landscaped village extremely convenient location close to I-40, groceries, restaurants, and the charming town of Black Mountain. Serendipity Treehaus fits the ambience of the village. The most striking features of the property are the setting, surrounded by trees and natural landscape, with lots of stone and wood. There are outdoor seating areas on all three levels with ample seating, including a spacious stone area with wood-burning fireplace behind the house. Firewood was available on property. The upscale interior features Viking appliances in the kitchen (and a full-size refrigerator/freezer in the ground-level bedroom). There is original art on the walls with accent lighting, and large flat-screen tvs and ample seating on all three floors. The three square toilets are an interesting touch. The A/C keeps all three floors comfortable. The multiple-head rainshower showers are fantastic, especially the one on the lower level, which is huge. The only place to hang clothes downstairs is in a wardrobe; the upper bedroom as three closets. People with mobility issues need to be aware that neither the uneven, natural stone steps nor entrance to the living area doors have handrails. There are platform beds in the two bedrooms, which were comfortable, but which are fairly low to the ground. Greybeard Rentals does an outstanding job of communication throughout the process, via email and text messages. Check-in and check-out are extremely easy. Upon checkout, you just strip the beds and put used towels on the floor. There is no trash removal, so you take your trash to the dumpster behind Greybeard's State Street office, which is close by. We had a blast staying there. The neighborhood is very friendly (on the 4th of July there was a one-man bagpipe player strolling the streets followed by local residents and their dogs). There's street parking on gravel shoulders immediately in front of the house. There's also a sake/sushi restaurant that was very popular, as well as a tavern and small grocery store, but there's a major grocery about a mile away. The BBQ restaurant was quite good and very popular as well, and there are quite a few good restaurants and bars in downtown Black Mountain, just minutes away from Cheshire. Looking forward to another Cheshire stay as soon as we can get away!

The house was exactly as described and pictured on the website, the house is located in a very quiet neighborhood in the middle of million dollar homes. 3 very nice restaurants within a 10 minute walk, beds very comfortable with lots of closet space. Kitchen was nice but very small and limited counter space it would have been difficult to make meals every night but we dined out every night so it wasn’t an issue for us. Just one warning lots of steps from the street to the 3rd level and unfortunately I hurt my knee before we left home and was walking with a cane…..I would not hesitate to return

Very good directions for getting to and in the house. Very Beautiful landscaping lots of lights outside and the house is beautiful!! Very Clean. There’s a few things to us would make the house perfect The house is very dark , more Lights though the whole house, especially in the upstairs bathroom . And a more comfortable and bigger couch , especially if you have 2 couples

Lovely home in the Village of Cheshire. Enjoyed the beautiful setting and close proximity to Black Mountain. My only negative comment was the kitchen refrigerator makes a loud constant noise. It sounds like the fan is going bad. It stayed cold but it made quite a racket making it difficult to fall asleep. The owner may not be aware of this.

Location of the house was perfect for the overall area. The property was beautiful and had everything we needed. The only possible issue would be that the 3 stories are all open with no doors to block sound which could possibly be an issue for privacy since sound carries. It didn't bother us and we loved everything about the property and hope to return soon.

We enjoyed the convenience of being in the woods and being close to Black Mountain! The house was incredible! However, if you have bad knees, the stairs might be too hard. We loved the fireplace (indoor and outdoor)!

Cozy, well-appointed cabin in a very nice "villiage"! Enjoyed the proximity to Black Mountain and Asheville and the beautiful surroundings. The Mid-level fireplace was very welcome during cooler evenings/mornings, as was the outdoor fireplace. Quite simply, a lovely setting!

The location. The town of Black Mountain was very nice, and the property close proximity to the highway makes it easy to get to Asheville, hiking spots, and other good places to visit. Having the Ingles right there is also very convenient.

The house was unique and gorgeous. The kids loved the outdoor and indoor fireplaces. The bathtub in the master upstairs is huge! Everything was thoughtfully designed and high-end. I would tell families with kids that there are no bedroom doors (modern, open concept) so if a member of your party goes to bed early be aware that the sound carries throughout the house.

The location of this tree house was perfect, close to a large grocery store, close to a charming mountain village and close to the Asheville Airport. The house was super clean and extremely stylish. I also enjoy the Branch Camp River, where I walked early in the morning to hear the rush of the river and smell the clean air. Greybeard Realty made this transaction smooth from start to finish. The house is beautifully designed and located in a nice little community. Just 20 minutes from Asheville and very central to many hiking trails around the area. Would love to come back!

Serendipity Treehaus was in a lovely neighborhood, very close to grocery store, Montreat and Black Mountain. It was quiet, very well maintained, nice neighborhood to walk around in the evening.

The pictures of how perfect this location is could not be any more true! A true escape in the mountains to get away from it all, yet still be able to walk and pick up great local food within a couple minutes.

The modern decor and furnishings in this immaculately clean home were so very comfortable and welcoming!
Our timing was perfect to enjoy the winter wonderland that the light snowfall created in Cheshire Village.
Our Serenity was enhanced by the peaceful white snow that arrived mid week to blanket the landscape and trees, yet the roads remained clear and safe. It was the perfect home to totally \"chill\" and relax!

The house is gorgeous! and although you have houses all around you it stills feel very private! We enjoyed our long weekend so much. There was a welcome package of pumpkin bread that was delicious and was perfect the first morning for breakfast! Lots to do in Black Mountain and just an overall lovely vacation!

WHERE IS THIS HOUSE LOCATED?

Serendipity Treehaus is located in Black Mountain. This home is approximately 5 minutes to downtown Black Mountain and approximately 20 minutes to Asheville. Click on the location tab above to locate this house on a map.

WHAT IS YOUR REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY?

If you need to cancel your reservation and the property you had reserved re-rents for the time which you had it reserved, you will be refunded all money you had paid minus an $89 cancellation fee. If you cancel and the property does not re-rent for your reserved dates, you will lose all money you have paid to that point. For this reason, we recommend that you purchase trip insurance. Please call 888-228-8008 before making a reservation if you have questions or concerns.

WHAT IS YOUR PET POLICY AND FEE?

Serendipity Treehaus is not “pet friendly”. Please be respectful of those owners who, because of allergies or other personal reasons, have chosen not to allow any pets. If housekeeping notes that a pet was present on a non-pet friendly property during your visit, you will be charged a minimum of $600 to clean carpets, upholstered furniture and complete air purification measures. Bringing a pet to a house that is not pet-friendly without owner consent or permission from Greybeard is grounds for termination of the rental agreement without refund. If you must travel with your pet, please contact us for local boarding recommendations. More info about service animals and the ADA is available here.

WHAT ARE CHECK-IN/CHECK OUT TIMES?

Check-in time is 4pm and check out time is 10am. It is important that we adhere to these times, because there is a chance that someone else will be checking out/in before or after you and we need sufficient time to ready the house for the next renter. If you wish to check-in early, there is a $50 early check-in fee that can be added on to your reservation. Early check-in is only available if someone is not checking out on the morning of your arrival.

WHERE DO WE CHECK-IN/PICK UP KEYS?

You will receive check-in instructions prior to your arrival with driving directions and key access information. You do not need to stop by our office to pick up your keys. You will go straight to the house and check-in starting at 4pm.

WHAT IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY DURING OUR STAY?

If you are having a medical emergency, dial 911 from the phone in your rental home or cell phone.

We hope that your stay in the area will be relaxing and without incident, but should you need to get in touch with Greybeard, we have someone on call 24 hours a day. Just call our office at 828-669-1072 and dial extension 203, which will forward to the cell phone of the person on call. Please do not hesitate to call us if something needs immediate attention, but if your question or concern can wait, we ask that you call the office during normal office hours.

WHEN ARE HOMES WITH GAS LOGS IN OPERATION?

Gas logs are not in operation May through September due to the warmer summer months.

Absolutely NO fires are permitted outside unless the property is fitted with a fire ring/fire pit. You cannot bring your own portable fire pit.

IS WIFI SERVICE INCLUDED WITH MY RENTAL RESERVATION? WILL I HAVE CELL PHONE SERVICE AT MY RENTAL?

Wifi is available at Serendipity Treehaus. Please note that Greybeard Rentals does not guarantee internet connectivity or speed. Each individual homeowner contracts directly with an internet service provider, and due to a variety of reasons, Greybeard does not guarantee service. Our Black Mountain and Asheville offices have wifi service available if needed.

Cell phone service is not guaranteed. You may check with your service provider to see if service is available.
