Named Best Arts District in the U.S. in 2026 as part of USA Today’s 10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards, the River Arts District (or RAD) creative hub is located within a couple of miles of downtown Asheville along a stretch of the French Broad River. RAD is home to hundreds of working artists and studios across a handful of creative corridors (Roberts Street, Artful Way, Clingman Ave. Ext., Depot Street, River Arts Place, and Lyman Street).

This beloved hub saw some of the greatest devastation from Hurricane Helene, but thanks to countless organizations, patrons, and art lovers, the area continues to heal and grow. While the landscaping is still evolving, the innovative and resilient spirit has remained constant.

Most of the studios are within walking distance of each other if you want to make a day of exploring. Most studios and galleries are open from 10 am–6 pm, though this varies by season. Be sure to check out this map to plan your visit and verify studio hours. If you’re hoping to catch all the Asheville highlights, we’d recommend Gray Line Trolley’s hop-on/hop-off tour that makes 8 stops along a 15-mile route around Asheville (including the RAD). Greybeard offers discounted 2-day passes—just ask when making a reservation!

Restaurants in River Arts District

If you want to feast on more than art, there are many great restaurants located in the River Arts District, including All Souls Pizza, Baby Bull, The Bull & Beggar, ButterPunk, Crusco, Fresh Wood Fired Pizza, Piccolina, and a rotation of food trucks on Foundy Street and at New Belgium Brewery. For a bite with a side of nail-biting soccer, we recommend Olde London Road English Pub. There are also some great coffee shops for that morning brew or afternoon pick-me-up paired with a pastry, including GRIND, Ultra, PennyCup, and Summit.

Breweries in River Arts District

The River Arts District also has you covered when it comes to breweries, cideries, and bars. Check out Afterglow, Anoche, Crucible, Hi-Wire Brewing, New Belgium Brewing, RAD Brewing, and WEDGE Brewing. The Wedge Brewery actually has two brewery options—both within the River Arts District.

The original Wedge operates out of the bottom of Wedge Studios, and the Wedge Foundation location is a quick drive away in a complex called the Foundation, home to some really amazing graffiti murals.

Entertainment in River Arts District

In addition to working artist studios that offer plenty of opportunities to shop small, the River Arts District is home to The Marquee, an indoor marketplace of curated vendors from around the region offering unique gifts, artful decor, jewelry, and more. Marquee’s owners are also responsible for the beloved Uncommon Market, Asheville’s largest curated pop-up market for antiques, art, vintage decor, jewelry, and beyond, which happens several times a year.

On the entertainment side, you'll find The Grey Eagle music venue —aka Asheville’s longest-running all-ages venue. It might be on the small side, but it packs a punch with its high-caliber performances from well over 10,000 different bands and artists, including favorites like Avett Brothers, Band of Horses, Indigo De Souza, Lake Street Dive, Nathaniel Ratcliff, and countless more.

For the skaters in your group, the Riverwalk is perfect for skating, biking, or simply walking alongside the French Broad. FishBrains Inline & Roller Skate Shop (located in the back of The Radical Hotel) offers high-quality gear for rent so you can experience the thrill of RAD on skates! On those hot summer days, you can also float down the French Broad River through Asheville Adventure Company or French Broad Outfitters nearby. Another great entertainment option is taking a tour through the French Broad Chocolate Factory. You can take their standard Bean to Bar tour and opt for a Wine + Chocolate Tasting or even book a private tour if you have a group of 7 or more.

For fellow creatives, several of the studios in RAD offer special classes so you can join in the art process. Pink Dog Creative Studio, Trackside Studios, ArtPlay Studio, and NC Glass Center are some of our favorites. Covering everything from gel and block printing to collage to glassblowing to jewelry making, these classes will end with the most special kind of souvenir—one you’ve made with your own two hands!

The River Arts District is proof that art has no bounds, and while you'll find plenty of art within studio walls, there's also plenty of art spilling onto the streets in the form of sculptures, unique steel fences, and clay mosaic murals!
