The annual Sourwood Festival takes place every August in Black Mountain. This kid-friendly, sourwood honey-inspired festival is one of Black Mountain's yearly highlights that boasts around 100 vendors who sell arts and crafts, local food including BBQ, vegetarian fare, custom ice-cream options, funnel cakes, corn on the cob and more.
Admission to this street festival is free, and the day prior to the festival is the Sourwood Idol Contest which is an amateur singing competition that takes place from 7-10 p.m. Contest winners can win $200 for first place, $100 for second place, $50 for third place.
Sourwood event activities on Saturday and Sunday include:
- Honey and bee demos
- Food vendor options
- Music and dancing
- Arts and crafts
- Kid's rides and games
- Face painting
- Sourwood 5K
Following the same pattern as 2021, the festival will spread out across the town of Black Mountain instead of congregating on Cherry and State Streets. The festival will also highlight Appalachian Heritage in Town Square from 9 AM-1 PM on Saturday. The exhibit will feature traditional craft demonstrations like spinning, weaving, lace-making, broom-making and more, and can be accessed by the walkways through the public green space.
