Description

Upon arriving at Chestnut House, you will immediately be greeted by the sight of towering trees that include varieties like hickory, tulip, black cherry, maple & dogwood along with the lovely fragrance of daylilies, irises, hydrangeas, and mountain laurel. Constructed from hand-hewn logs and rare wormy chestnut that can be seen on the interior paneling and cabinetry, this home offers a warm and rustic feel coupled with modern luxuries. In the morning, watch the sunrise over the mountains and catch a glimpse of the hummingbirds darting about while sipping your coffee in the rocking chair on the front porch before enjoying a delicious breakfast at the outdoor dining table. Wander onto the large terraced front lawn to pick fresh raspberries & blueberries in the summer months, or harvest some of the many herbs & veggies when in season (including sage, thyme, dill, carrots, arugula, poblano peppers, tomatoes & more) growing in the raised beds to add flavor and color to your meals. Pack a small picnic to enjoy along the banks of the nearby pond or in the expansive meadow before making your way to the pristine trout-filled waters of the Pigeon River to fish & rock hop to your heart’s content. Take a short drive (approx. 2 miles) to reach Lake Logan, where you can spend your afternoons soaking up the sun, swimming, and kayaking. On your way home, stop by the Ten Acre Garden in Canton to get lost in the sunflower maze & enjoy wood oven pizza (exclusively offered on Saturday afternoons as a thanks to the community).

For outdoor enthusiasts, there are several hiking & mountain biking trails within a 5-mile radius of the cabin throughout the majestic Pisgah National Forest. Travel just 15 miles to reach the iconic Blue Ridge Parkway, where you’ll find scenic stops, miles of hiking trails, and numerous waterfalls to explore. For an outdoor experience you won’t soon forget, travel 30 miles to reach The Great Smoky Mountains National Park at Cataloochee to observe the epic elk herd. Gorgeous golf courses and downhill skiing are also within driving distance of the cabin, offering exciting activities throughout the calendar year. When you’re ready to explore the nearby small towns, be sure to check out the charming town of Waynesville just 15 min. away which boasts a number of boutique shops, farmer’s markets, restaurants, breweries, museums, and galleries. If you’re interested in exploring city life, travel 40 minutes west to check out the attractions that give Asheville its eccentric and exciting reputation. Take a tour of the Biltmore House and Grounds, spend the day at the Grove Park Inn Spa for some much-needed self-care, capture some photos and sample the local brews in the colorful River Arts District, and end the day by enjoying a meal at one of the many award-winning restaurants, or return home to use the fully equipped gourmet kitchen to prepare a fabulous dinner to enjoy al fresco or at the custom-built dining room table with front-row mountain views.

After dinner, gather around the floor-to-ceiling stone fireplace in the cozy living room & stream that movie you’ve been meaning to see. On those chilly nights, build a fire in the outdoor fire pit to stay warm and roast s’mores, and stargaze into the late-night hours while talking and laughing with loved ones. Whether you’re rocking on the front porch just watching the clouds roll over the mountains or listening to the sounds of the river or reading while you lounge in the community hammock beneath the trees, Chestnut House will offer you a unique glimpse into Appalachian living and provide a stay that’s filled with the sweetness & warmth that lends the cabin its name.

Note: This home is pet-friendly with an additional fee. AWD or 4WD is strongly recommended during the winter months. The roads to the cabin are paved (aside from a short stretch of level gravel). There is parking for 5 cars.

FAQ

WHERE IS THIS HOUSE LOCATED?

Chestnut House is located in Canton. This home is approximately 15 minutes to downtown Waynesville, 30 minutes to Maggie Valley, and 40 minutes to downtown Asheville. Click on the location tab above to locate this house on a map.

WHAT IS YOUR REFUND/CANCELLATION POLICY?

If you need to cancel your reservation and the property you had reserved re-rents for the time which you had it reserved, you will be refunded all money you had paid minus an $89 cancellation fee. If you cancel and the property does not re-rent for your reserved dates, you will lose all money you have paid to that point. For this reason, we recommend that you purchase trip insurance. Please call 888-228-8008 before making a reservation if you have questions or concerns.

WHAT IS YOUR PET POLICY AND FEE?

Chestnut House is specified as "pet friendly" and dogs are allowed. Unfortunately, due to common allergy problems we cannot allow cats. For the privilege of bringing your dog, there is a minimum charge of $100 nonrefundable fee per pet. A maximum of two dogs are allowed unless you have received special permission from the property manager or homeowner. Any damage that may be caused by your pet during your stay will be paid for out of your security deposit or charged to the credit card we have on file. There is a county-wide leash law in place. When taking your dog outside of a gated area, please ensure that they are on a leash.

WHAT ARE CHECK-IN/CHECK OUT TIMES?

Check-in time is 4pm and check out time is 10am. It is important that we adhere to these times, because there is a chance that someone else will be checking out/in before or after you and we need sufficient time to ready the house for the next renter. If you wish to check-in early, there is a $50 early check-in fee that can be added on to your reservation. Early check-in is only available if someone is not checking out on the morning of your arrival.

WHERE DO WE CHECK-IN/PICK UP KEYS?

You will receive check-in instructions for Chestnut House prior to your arrival with driving directions and key access information. You do not need to stop by our office to pick up your keys. You will go straight to the house and check-in starting at 4pm.

WHAT IF THERE IS AN EMERGENCY DURING OUR STAY?

If you are having a medical emergency, dial 911 from the phone in your rental home or cell phone.

We hope that your stay in the area will be relaxing and without incident, but should you need to get in touch with Greybeard, we have someone on call 24 hours a day. Just call our office at 828-669-1072 and dial extension 203, which will forward to the cell phone of the person on call. Please do not hesitate to call us if something needs immediate attention, but if your question or concern can wait, we ask that you call the office during normal office hours.

WHEN IS THE SECURITY DEPOSIT REFUNDED?

Security deposits are returned within 30 days of guest departure.

WILL THERE BE FIREWOOD AT THE HOUSE? WHEN ARE HOMES WITH GAS LOGS IN OPERATION?

Firewood is typically not supplied by Greybeard. Some houses will have a small supply of firewood for renter use; however, it is best to purchase your own small bundle of wood or Duraflame pressed logs at the local grocery store.

Cutting branches, limbs or trees on the property is strictly prohibited. You can use limbs found on the ground. Absolutely NO fires are permitted outside unless the property is fitted with a fire ring/fire pit. You cannot bring your own portable fire pit.

Gas logs are not in operation May through September due to the warmer summer months.

IS WIFI SERVICE INCLUDED WITH MY RENTAL RESERVATION? WILL I HAVE CELL PHONE SERVICE AT MY RENTAL?

Wifi is available at Chestnut House. Please note that Greybeard Rentals does not guarantee internet connectivity or speed. Each individual homeowner contracts directly with an internet service provider, and due to a variety of reasons, Greybeard does not guarantee service. Our Black Mountain and Asheville offices have wifi service available if needed.

Cell phone service is not guaranteed. You may check with your service provider to see if service is available.

ARE THERE FISHING SPOTS AT OR NEAR THIS RENTAL?

There are several fishing options nearby and within the Rivermont Community where Chestnut House is locatedThe quarter acre fishing pond, located adjacent to the grassy meadow, is one-tenth of a mile from the cabin and has water flowing through it from the Little East Fork Pigeon River. Though the pond is not stocked, it has lots of brim (also known as bluegill), some bass, and trout on occasion. It is primarily intended for catch and release, and it's often enjoyed by children using barbless hooks and crickets. There is also a supply of fish food if you're just interested in feeding and watching the fish.

Less than 10 yards from the pond is the Little East Fork Pigeon River which is stocked with rainbow, brook, and brown trout. You must have a fishing license in order to fish in this river. Guests staying at Chestnut House will have exclusive access to both sides of nearly 200 yards of the river. Another great local spot for trout fishing is located 3.5 miles away from Chestnut House off Hwy 215 between the steel-beamed bridge and Burnett Siding Baptist Church.

We have immunocompromised family members who have not been able to visit during this crazy time. We met here for 3 days & it could not have been more magical! It was also the perfect vacation for our dog Ollie. We noticed all of the care & detail put into the house and property for your guests. I cannot tell you how much we appreciated them! We disconnected, we reconnected, we laughed until we cried, and we could not have asked for more.

So relaxing and peaceful!
